As the official photographer for the Wales Women’s National Football Team, I recently had the privilege of photographing the players' headshots. These images will be used by the Football Association of Wales (FAW) as well as broadcasters to promote upcoming games, and they needed to capture both the personality and professionalism of each player.
Preparing for the Shoot....
Headshots may seem simple at first glance, but the preparation that goes into them is anything but. For this shoot, the brief was clear: the photos needed to be clean, professional, and versatile enough for use across multiple platforms, from social media graphics to broadcast TV promos.
The shoot took place over a three days at the team’s hotel. It was crucial to have a portable yet effective lighting setup that could handle any unexpected changes in the environment. I went for a simple but effective four-point lighting system to ensure the players' faces were evenly lit, while still giving depth and character to the images. A plain, neutral background was chosen to keep the focus squarely on the athletes and making it easier to cut out for any promotional use. I had created a mood board for the players to look at for inspiration of poses and the style we were aiming to achieve.
Capturing the Team’s Spirit
When photographing athletes, especially in a team like this, the challenge is to capture more than just a face. Each player has their own personality, and it's my job to bring that out in a single frame. While some players come to life in front of the camera immediately, others need a little more coaxing to feel comfortable. It’s all about creating a relaxed atmosphere where they can be themselves.
I encouraged each player to relax and express their individuality. Some players gave me a confident, fierce expression, while others went for a more approachable, friendly look. The key was making sure every shot felt authentic to who they are, as these headshots will be seen by fans and media alike.
Meeting the Needs of Broadcasters
One of the most important elements of this shoot was ensuring the headshots worked not just for the FAW but for broadcasters as well. Broadcasters use these images in a variety of formats—from pre-game lineups to player profiles on TV. This meant the images had to be adaptable to different sizes and aspect ratios while maintaining their quality.
To meet this requirement, I shot with a slightly wider frame than usual, giving enough room for broadcasters to crop as needed without losing any detail. Consistency was key—uniform lighting and positioning ensured that the images could be seamlessly integrated into any format, while still maintaining a professional look.
The Outcome...
At the end of the day, we captured a series of headshots that highlight the players' personalities while meeting the technical requirements of the FAW and broadcasters. These images will now be seen across a range of platforms as the Wales Women’s National Football Team gears up for their European 2015 qualifiers campaign.
As a photographer, there’s something uniquely satisfying about knowing your work will help represent a team on such a public stage. I look forward to seeing the images in action, promoting the passion and dedication of these incredible athletes.
